چکیده

The problem of lactose synthesis in the mammary gland is two-fold: (a) the mechanism by which galactose is formed and (b) the mechanism of condensation of t’he monosaccharide precursors to form the disaccharide. Several mechanisms for the glucose-galactose interconversion in nature have been postulated: (a) Walden inversion of the hydroxyl on carbon atom 4 of glucose (Rohman (I), Robinson (a), Caputto et al. (3)); (b) condensation of two trioses catalyzed by an aldolase reaction (4) (the presence of aldolase in milk was reported by Polis and Shmukler (5)) ; (c) cyclit.ols such as L-inositol (Fischer (6)) or muco-inositol (Topper and Stetten (7)) may be intermediates in the conversion. The work reported here was undertaken with the object of throwing some light on the mechanism of lactose format.ion by studying radioactivity distribution in lactose of milk from a mammary gland perfused with l-C?*glucose. It was found that the lactose synthesized contained about equal amounts of radioactivity in the glucose and galactose moieties. Virtually all of the isotope in each of the monosaccharides was in carbon atom 1.

Lactose synthesis. II. The distribution of C14 in lactose of milk from the perfused isolated cow udder.

The distribution of Cl4 in milk lactose after intravenous injection of various labeled compounds has been determined by Schambye, Wood, and Kleiber (l), who found that the Cl4 pattern of the glucose differed from that of the galactose particularly when acetate-l-Cl4 or NaHC403 was administered. They proposed that free glucose (in equilibrium with blood glucose) was the precursor of the glucose ...

An overview of solute carrier family (facilitated glucose transporter) genes and their role in bovine mammary gland functioning

Milk yield greatly depends on mammary lactose synthesis due to its osmoregulatory property for mammary uptake of wate. A large amount of glucose is required by lactating dairy cows as the main precursor for lactose synthesis. Solute carriers (glucose transporters) in the bovine mammary gland play a key role in the transport of glucose and therefore milk synthesis. Different sugar transporters h...

Galactose Mixture by Slices of the Active Mammary Gland in Vitro

SVANBERG [1930] investigated the possibility that a brei made of the lactating mammary gland might synthesize lactose from added glucose or a glucosegalactose mixture. In his experiments toluene was used as a preservative, and the reducing sugars were partitioned into disaccharide and monosaccharide fractions. With one doubtful exception, the results were negative. Michlin & Lewitow [1934] carr...

Effects of glucose on lactose synthesis in mammary epithelial cells from dairy cow.

BACKGROUND Lactose, as the primary osmotic component in milk, is the major determinant of milk volume. Glucose is the primary precursor of lactose. However, the effect of glucose on lactose synthesis in dairy cow mammary glands and the mechanism governing this process are poorly understood. RESULTS Here we showed that glucose has the ability to induce lactose synthesis in dairy cow mammary ep...
